DMV Benefit

Step 1: Print and fill out form NY-1E and MV-215

For the Reason for Exemption, write in "Disabled Veteran" and send documents to NYS Dept of Motor Vehicles, Refund Section, 6 Empire State Plaza, Room 233, Albany, New York 12228-0126.

This was our approach. You should know something within 2-3 weeks of sending the documents.  We sent the following documents:

  •  Driver’s License

  • Vehicle Registration

  • VA Compensation Letter

This will show proof of identity and vehicle ownership. Only one vehicle is allowed. Do not make any assumptions as to whether you should file. It has been our experience people of many different ratings have been approved from exemption. SO, APPLY.

You will then receive a letter stating how much of your refund will be which is the amount you paid for your registration, then the next day you will receive your new registration.

Step 2: Once you receive the Exempt Registration back then make a copy and fill out Form TA-W5175.  Send them both to NYS Thruway Authority, Office of E-Z Pass Operations, PO Box 189, Albany, New York 12228-0126.

Step 3: Tell your veteran friends about this page.

DO NOT GO TO YOUR LOCAL DMV as THEY CANNOT help you with this matter. They will give you a "dear in the headlights look".
