OUR HISTORY

The Rochester Veterans Executive Council (VEC) traces its roots back to before 1870, when local veteran leaders and service organizations in Monroe County began meeting informally to coordinate support for returning servicemembers. These early gatherings helped unify posts, chapters, and veteran associations during a time when thousands of World War I veterans were seeking community, recognition, and assistance.

As the needs of veterans grew, these informal collaborations evolved into an organized council dedicated to strengthening communication, coordinating events, and advocating collectively for veterans across the Rochester region. By the mid-20th century, the Council had become a central pillar of the local veteran community, helping shape major initiatives, public ceremonies, and collaborative support efforts.

Over time, the VEC assumed stewardship of two of Rochester’s most important veteran traditions:

  • The Veterans Memorial Committee, charged with the care and preservation of the historic Veterans War Memorial at the Blue Cross Arena.

  • The Rochester Memorial Day Parade Committee, which organizes and oversees the city’s annual parade honoring fallen heroes.

Today, the Rochester Veterans Executive Council continues the mission begun nearly a century ago—uniting veteran leaders, strengthening advocacy, and ensuring that Rochester remains a community where veterans and their families are honored, supported, and never forgotten.
